I Did It! Completing My Gateway Award Bronze Level 🎉

​Hi everyone! I am so excited to share a major update today. I finally received the official word from the Gateway Award team, and it's official—I have completed the Bronze award!

​Getting this email made all the hard work totally worth it:


​"Hi David, That all looks great, congratulations on completing the Bronze award. I will get the certificates and medals out in the post for you today. Many thanks"


​I can't wait for the postman to arrive so I can finally see the certificate and medal in person. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, even if just following along on this blog. Stay tuned for other future posts on both my life journey and the usual devotional content!

​What is the Gateway Award?

​The Gateway Award is a fun activity program where you set your own goals and do things at your own speed. Anyone of any age or ability can take part.

​When you do the award, you get to choose what you want to do and when you want to do it. There are three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

​To finish a level, you have to do five different sections:

  • ​Hobbies
  • ​Fitness
  • ​Volunteering
  • ​Lifestyle
  • ​The Gateway Challenge

​When you finish a level, you get a special certificate and a medal.

​I have successfully completed the Bronze level. Even though autism is its own distinct category of neurodivergence, there is often crossover with learning disabilities or mental health support, which made me eligible to take part in this fantastic course.

Gateway Bronze: Week 1 – Setting the Foundation

​ 1. Lifestyle (Health and Wellbeing) ​ The Rhythm: This week I’ve used the Finch app and the Northumbria Office to keep a consistent daily sanctuary. It’s helped me stay grounded as I start this six-month journey. ​ Evidence:   ​ 2. Personal Challenge (Self-Awareness) ​ The Connection: I attended the Dad & Me group at Midlothian Sure Start . Describe your take on the Charlie Kirk murder: I have held off judgement as whatever happens he was human and I refuse to speak ill of any dead. I agreed with him on some things and strongly disagreed on other things. I will let God be his judge, not me.  None the less I always have questions: Was it weird Netanyahu said it wasn't him?  Why this one killing got so much attention when it is daily, even hourly in the USA?  What's in the files?  Why wasn't the flags even at half mast for the senators murdered only months before for example?  Thoughts about the service I admittedlly only saw bits of:  Horst Wessel effect? Day 1 – Walk for Autism 2026: Let's Go! 👟♾️

Today is officially Day 1 of the Walk for Autism challenge, and my legs are already warmed up — because I haven't exactly been waiting around! Over the past couple of months I've been quietly clocking up steps ahead of this week, so by the time the official 8-day challenge kicked off this morning (26th March – 2nd April), I'd already built up a bit of momentum. The goal is 10,000 steps a day, every day, raising money for Autism Initiatives — and I'm going into it with a decent head start on the 80,000-step target. If you've seen my fundraiser page, you'll already know why this cause sits so close to my heart. I'm walking for my wife Sarah, for Solomon, Gabriel, Lilianna, and Ezra — a family that is, in every sense, living and breathing neurodiversity every single day. ​For a long time, I tried to fit into spaces that weren't built for me. My Personal Challenge for the Bronze Award is in part a commitment to stop masking and start seeking. ​By attending Dad & Me, I am seeking the community help I need to be a regulated parent (it is the February break in Midlothian and Solomon was a bit poorly so we did skip a week). By searching for an ASN-friendly church, I am seeking the spiritual help I need to practice my faith without burnout. This week we went local.
