What is Lee Abbey? A Place of Heart and Community
"My friends, we should all love each other. It is God who makes us able to love other people."
— 1 John 4:7 (EasyEnglish Bible)
Some people wonder, "What on earth is Lee Abbey?" I mention it a lot. Contrary to some rumours I didn't runaway with the monks for a summer, it isn't that kind of Abbey. It is a summer retreat center run by a Christian community. To me, it is much more than just a building or a holiday spot though. It is a place where my journey into a more open-hearted Christianity really began. We were taught to be Jesus' hands and feet in this world, a teaching that stayed with me over the years.
My Summer in 2006
Back in 2006, I spent the summer as a worker at Lee Abbey in Devon. That experience nurtured my love for intentional communities—places where people live, work, and pray together as a family.
I have such happy memories of that time:
- Communion on the beach: Sharing the liturgy, the bread and wine with the sound of the waves nearby.
- The Chapel Cave: A quiet, holy space tucked away in nature.
- Nature walks: Finding God’s presence in the beauty of the Devon cliffs and woods.
My Commitment as a Friend
Even though my summer there was years ago, and I haven't been back there physically, I remain a Lee Abbey Friend. This means I share a special commitment with others who love the community. As Friends, we commit ourselves:
- to Christ as Saviour and Lord
- to work, through prayer and witness, for the conversion of others
- to regular prayer – for the renewal of the church, for the work of Lee Abbey and for our local churches and communities
Whether I am in the quiet of a chapel or out in the wild woods, these values stay with me. It’s about living out our faith together, with open hearts and open doors.
Pax et Bonum!
Peace and the good!
